Summary
Other members of 1on1s can see your profile, except your contact info, which reaches only the people you are connected with. You choose which parts members see, and you can stop being findable altogether. We do not sell data, show ads or track you beyond what this page describes.
What we store
- Your profile: whatever you enter. First and last name, at least one motivation and one way to contact you are required.
- Your photo (optional): your device crops and shrinks it before upload, so the original file and details in it, such as where it was taken, are never sent.
- Your email and password: used to sign in and recover your account. Your sign-up email is not part of your profile, so others see it only if you also add it there. Passwords are stored only in hashed form.
- If you sign in with Google or Microsoft: they send us your email address, your name and an ID for your account with them (Google also sends a link to your profile picture, which we do not use). We never receive your Google or Microsoft password.
- Connections: who you connected with, when, and how you met; your private notes and reminders about them; and, if you chose to keep them, the original transcripts or notes you summarised. Nobody but you sees these.
- Connection requests and 1:1s: requests you send and receive, 1:1 requests, the messages in them, and agreed times.
- Settings: your time zone, whether people can find you, which parts of your profile members see, and, for each device where you turn on Reminders, the address your browser gives us for delivering notifications.
- Bugs and questions: what you send through Bugs/questions, with your name and username, stored and emailed to the 1on1s team.
- Usage counts: when you searched, checked contacts or used AI, kept only to enforce limits.
Who sees what
Both of these are enforced by the database, not just the app. Empty fields show as a dash, and edits reach people immediately.
- People you are connected with see your whole profile: everything below, and your contact info (phone, emails and handles).
- Every other member who is signed in sees your name, username, photo, Basics (such as graduation year, major and dorm), Talk to me about and Motivations, and can ask you for a 1:1. They never see your contact info.
Members see this only while “Let people find me” is on and your profile is complete. You can turn off any part except your name under Settings, “What members see”. Turning a part off hides it from members at once; people you are connected with still see it.
With “Let people find me” off, your name, username and photo can still be seen by anyone you have sent a connection request to (who also sees the rest of what members would see, so they can decide) or who has sent you one, and by people on the nearby list with you (name and photo only).
Weekly random 1:1s are off unless you turn them on. If you do, your match each week sees what members see, and nothing more, until you both say yes, when you are connected. That includes while “Let people find me” is off, and Settings says so. Saying no is never shown to them.
Location
Location is used only by Nearby, only after you press “Show me who’s nearby”, and only while the Connect screen is open. One position is kept and overwritten each time, so there is no history. It is deleted when you leave the screen and expires on its own after 45 seconds without an update. Nobody can read it: others with Nearby on within about 150 metres see only your name, photo and rough distance. So that nobody can fake a location to work out yours, your last position is also kept for 30 minutes after you leave, only to check that the next one is somewhere you could have got to; it too is overwritten, never added to, and nobody can read it. If you decline location access, you can still connect by username.
Being found and finding people
“Let people find me” is on by default and can be turned off in Settings. While it is on, you are listed under People, where any member can browse and search what you show members; and people on 1on1s can find you by your username; by your full name, the phone number or emails on your profile, or the email you signed up with, if those are in their contacts; and by your full name if it appears in notes they import. A contact match never says which detail matched. Anyone who finds you can ask to connect, or to connect and meet for a 1:1. Your contact info is shared only if you accept. With it off, nobody can find you these ways, and you look the same as someone who is not on 1on1s.
When you check your own contacts, each name, number and email is scrambled (hashed) on your device and only the scrambled form is sent. It is compared and discarded; 1on1s keeps nothing about your contacts.
Dictation
Dictation uses your browser's speech recognition. Chrome sends the audio to Google; Safari uses Apple's servers or your device. 1on1s never receives audio, only the text.
AI summaries
AI is used only when you press a button that says it will. Typing notes never involves AI. When you press it, the text you uploaded, dictated or imported, the names of the people in it, and your existing notes about them are sent to Anthropic, which makes the Claude models. Those notes are about other people, so keep that in mind before pressing it. Anthropic's terms for this use say it does not train on the data and deletes it within 30 days, except where it must keep it longer to enforce its usage policy or comply with the law. The result is a draft; nothing is saved until you press Save. Files you import are read on your device and never uploaded; only their text is sent.
On your device
A cookie keeps you signed in. Your light or dark theme is stored only in your browser. There are no analytics or advertising cookies.
Deleting your account
“Delete your account”, in Settings on your profile, removes your profile, photo, connections in both directions, notes, reminders, requests, 1:1s and the account itself. It also removes the private notes other people wrote about you: a note about someone who has asked to be forgotten is still a record of them. Anyone you had a 1:1 with still counts it among their 1:1s done: a date, with nothing about you.
Service providers
1on1s runs on Vercel (hosting) and Supabase (database), in the United States, which hold data only to run the service. Anthropic processes text you choose to summarise. Resend delivers bug reports and questions to the 1on1s team by email. Notifications are delivered through your browser's push service (Apple, Google or Mozilla).
